Hydro Motion

The TU Delft Solar Boat Team has achieved successful performances with its solar-powered boats in recent years. In doing so, they have shown what the technology is worth. This year, the team is taking the next big step to design and build a boat that sails on hydrogen. The boat is being developed by 20 ambitious students. They want to inspire the maritime sector, currently a large consumer of fossil fuels, to move faster towards a green future. With the project, called Hydro Motion, the team members are working towards a hugely challenging competition; the Solar & Energy Boat Challenge which will take place in Monaco next July.

Potential of Hydrogen

Team members have been working hard all year on the Hydro Motion project to win the race in July and they believe that using hydrogen will increase their chances. Hydrogen has a high energy density, which means that just a small amount of hydrogen contains a lot of energy. This makes hydrogen very interesting as a medium for green energy storage. It also keeps the boat light and allows the team to sail quickly and efficiently. Successful practices will help in inspiring the maritime sector, which is currently still a large consumer of fossil fuels. Together we can move towards a green future using hydrogen. The Solar Boat Team has this important goal in mind and wants to show what is possible in practice.
